Curriculum Vitae of Giovanni Semeraro

Research interests: Logical and algebraic foundations of machine learning, similarity-based learning, multistrategy learning, knowledge representation, automated reasoning, inductive inference, theory revision, decision tree pruning, discovery of causal relations, and real-world applications of machine learning (document processing, map interpretation, intelligent user interfaces), with specific interests towards integration of learning systems into distributed architectures for digital libraries on Internet and electronic commerce.

He attended Universita' degli Studi di Bari, in Bari, Italy, where he received a laurea degree in Information Science with full marks and honors on March 25, 1988. His thesis on inductive inference in a variable-valued logic was awarded with the TELECOM (Italian Telecommunication company) prize for the best theses. Following graduation, he went on making research on machine learning in the Knowledge Acquisition and Machine Learning Laboratory (LACAM), headed by prof. Floriana Esposito, at the Dipartimento di Informatica of Universita' degli Studi di Bari and took part to several national research projects.

In July 1988, he won a scholarship sponsored by Software Sistemi S.p.A. for investigating the applicability of machine learning techniques (inductive inference) to the problem of document analysis and classification. This study was carried on within a collaboration between OLIVETTI D.O.R. (Direzione Olivetti Ricerca) and Universita’ degli Studi di Bari, and resulted in a prototypical machine learning system for automatic classification of office documents (DOCS).

In June 1989, he was employed by Tecnopolis CSATA Novus Ortus as a research scientist in the area of advanced software technology. There he was engaged in the ESPRIT Project No. 2570 MACS (Maintenance Assistance Capabilities for Software), Workpackage SEES (Software Evolution Expert System).
Since July 1991, he is an assistant professor at the Dipartimento di Informatica, Universita' degli Studi, Bari, Italy. During the period May 1991 - May 1993 he participated in the ESPRIT Project No. 5203 INTREPID (INnovative Techniques for REcognition and ProcessIng of Documents), Workpackage AP (APplication for automatic classification of documents), with the aim of developing an innovative application for automatic classification of office documents. Since September 1991, he has been participating to the ESPRIT Project No. 7115 MLnet (Network of Excellence on Machine Learning). He is currently involved also in the ESPRIT Project No. 7230 COMPUnet (Network of Excellence on COMPUtational logic), in the ESPRIT Project No. 20821 SODAS (Symbolic Official Data Analysis System) and in the scientific programme in the social sciences LHM (Learning in Humans and Machines) of the European Science Foundation. Currently, he is a lecturer in the course of ‘Formal Languages and Translators’ for the degree in Computer Science and gives lectures on mathematical logic, object centred knowledge representation, automated induction, first order concept learning and theory revision in the course of ‘Knowledge Engineering and Expert Systems’ for the degree in Computer Science. He has also taught foundations of computer science and computer networks to high school teachers in the training program of the Italian Ministry of Education. He has been tutor of several degree thesis on machine learning and its applications to document processing, digital libraries and map interpretation.
